Public lecture: Depressed, anxious and active: How to engage people with mental health problems in community physical activity and sport

Dr Florence Kinnafick, Lecturer in Psychology at Loughborough University, will present an NCSEM public lecture this June.

There is growing interest in the relationship between physical activity and mental health. This talk will provide an overview of the psycho-social benefits of exercise on mental health.

The talk will then discuss, using evidence from Mind’s Get Set to Go programme, how community-based programmes can best engage people with mental health problems.

Dr Florence Kinnafick’s research focuses on social contextual and environmental determinants of physical activity behaviour change (long-term persistence, drop out and lapses), and mental health outcomes of exercise behaviour. Dr Kinnafick led the evaluation of the Sport England/Lottery funded Get Set to Go national physical activity programme delivered by Mind. Dr Kinnafick has also worked with Youth Sport Trust, Table Tennis England and more recently England Netball on the role of physical activity and sport to support psychological wellbeing and improve mental health.
